Documentary Feature | USA | 2024 | English/Hebrew/Yiddish | 105 minutes
Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie is torn between rejecting and embracing his destiny—he is the dynastic heir of 38 generations of Orthodox rabbis, including the Chief Rabbis of Israel, but also a drag-queen rebel and founder of Lab/Shul, an everybody-friendly, artist-driven, experimental congregation. When he decides to return to conservative rabbinical school, he embarks on a quest to reconcile the radical and traditional aspects of his religion and identity. Weaving together a wealth of fascinating footage filmed over 21 years, director Sandi DuBowski empathetically captures Amichai’s epic journey to discover what it means to be Jewish in a rapidly changing 21st century.
