Alyse (Samantha Smart, JANE AUSTEN’S PERIOD DRAMA, HIFF 2024) is a devoted music therapist working in a children’s hospital alongside a rambunctious team of practitioners. When Charlie (Gabriela Ochoa Perez), a guarded teenage girl, enters her care, a rewarding—and at times precarious—friendship blossoms between the two. With Charlie facing a troubling diagnosis, Alyse’s past emotional wounds around family loss resurface and, with some luck, begin to heal. Taking home Best U.S. Narrative Feature and Performance Awards at Tribeca, CHARLIEBIRD is a sensitively crafted, tender feature debut from director Libby Ewing.
