In 1957 Budapest, a twelve-year-old Jewish boy Andor (outstanding newcomer Bojtorján Barabas) comes of age in the aftermath of the uprising against the communist regime. Andor’s mother (Andrea Waskovics) raises him on idealized tales of his father, a hero who died in the camps during World War II. When a brutish man (Grégory Gadebois) appears in their lives claiming to be Andor’s true father, everything he understands about himself turns upside down. Fresh from premieres at Venice and TIFF, HIFF alum László Nemes (SON OF SAUL, 2015) returns with this poignantly written and superbly acted interrogation of the legacy of violence and war on Jewish identity.
