New York Premiere

Documentary Feature | Cuba/Spain | 2025 | Spanish | 74 minutes

Landi is a father who secretly camps in the marshlands of Zapata, Cuba, where he hunts crocodiles with his bare hands to feed his family. On the coast, his wife Mercedes awaits his return as she cares for their son, who suffers from severe autism. Days go by, and Mercedes becomes impatient—Landi should have returned by now, and there is no news of him. Shot in stunning black-and-white cinematography, TO THE WEST, IN ZAPATA is an enrapturing and meditative portrait of one family’s cycle through need and absence, and the resilience they find in themselves and each other.

A Q&A with director David Bim is expected to follow both screenings.
