Documentary Feature | Benin/France/Senegal | 2024 | English/Fon/French | 68 minutes
Winner of the Berlinale Golden Bear, HIFF alum Mati Diop (ATLANTIQUES, 2019) returns with her piercing and inventive documentary feature debut, following the restitution of twenty-six royal treasures of the Kingdom of Dahomey. Plundered by French colonial troops in 1892, these artifacts now make their way from Paris back to their country of origin, the present-day Republic of Benin. While the soul of the artifacts is freed, debate rages among students of the University of Abomey-Calavi, who explore how to adapt to these ancestors' homecoming in a country that has had to forge ahead in their absence. A MUBI release.
