When Robert takes his young son Sam and almost adult daughter Kate back to summer at their grandmother's house in the glorious English countryside after his divorce, they find Hannah (Jean Simmons) in the care of a mysterious and charming young man named Joe. The siblings come to adore the enigmatic Joe, but for different reasons, and each shares their own adventure with the stranger under the watchful eye of a suspicious father. The family also becomes involved with a charming and bohemian theater group that's rehearsing The Tempest on the nearby beach. As the well-meaning but sometimes clueless and staid Robert attempts to pry his hopelessly romantic and headstrong mother away from her idyllic but isolated home, there comes a clash between the pragmatic and the idealistic. Hannah is a free-spirited relic, living amidst the rustic old-world pleasures of nature and poetry, reminiscing about a golden age before her beloved husband passed. Her health is failing, but no practical remedy for her situation is forthcoming, and compassionate young Joe is leaving soon to pursue dreams of his own, When a crisis occurs, the family must confront an uncertain future, and the love that binds them is sorely tested. SHADOWS IN THE SUN is a film about redemption and the bittersweet joys of coming home.
